One grave in particular stands out - it is the only grave facing in a different direction to all the others. This is the grave of an unnamed robber that was caught in the act. He was exiled from Pilgrim's Rest (the town), but his body was later found nearby.

This gravestone on slate can be seen at the Voortrekker Cemetry at Ohrigstad in the South African province of Mpumalanga. It reads: Here rests Jacobus Johannes Burger in life Secretary of the Citizens' Council of Natal and later of Ohrigstad Born 24 April 1795 Died 9 May 1849 The Voortrekkers (literally "pioneers") are dutch speaking people who fled British rule in the Cape of Good Hope colony. The British adopted the 1836 [CAPE OF GOOD HOPE] PUNISHMENT ACT and the Voortrekkers who were settling the ZAR (the old Transvaal) with the capital at Potchefstroom were forced to move once more. The Act proclaimed "the extension of British jurisdiction (but not sovereignty) as far north as the 25th degree of south latitude". Under leadership of Andries Potgieter they moved to this area and away from the 25th. The right to the land was obtained from Sekwati a Bapedi king, who required assistance against attacks by the Swazi nation. A town (Ohrigstad) was formed in 1845 and land awarded to prospective farmers by the Citizens' Council and according to a formula. All went well until swarms of malaria mosquitoes struck in summer. For three years the Voortrekkers stoically suffered this visitation as they have endured so many others before. However, in the summer of 1848-49 the number of deaths due to malaria reach such proportions that many settlers decided that enough was enough. Andries Potgieter and some of his followers moved to the Soutpansberg in the far northern Transvaal and later settled at Potgietersrust, while the others moved south to found Lydenburg, also known as the town of suffering due to their experience at Ohrigstad. When Potgieter and his followers moved from Potchefstroom, they were joined by JJ Burger and his followers from Natal. Apparently JJ Burger and the Natalians remained at odds with Potgieter and refused to recognise his leadership. Lesson 1: submit to british rule or be eaten by the mosquitoes. Someone should have warned those guys in Argentina and Iraq. Lesson 2: don't be at odds with Potgieter, the mosquitoes will get you.

May you all rest in peace during the next two days, a.k.a. the weekend. There was no name on the grave, but it dates from the end of the 19th century at the time of the gold rush at Pilgrimsrest.

She is a special farrier. You will notice she wears a rider's number, indicating that she will also participate in the ride the next day. One of the people with the most endurance riding experience in South Africa, having covered more than 12,000 successful kilometers over all distances in competitive riding. She is also co-owner of the Arkab Stud specialising in endurance horses. As such her farrier knowledge will always be put to good use on a regular base.

A farrier is a specialist in equine hoof care, including the trimming and balancing of a horse's hoof and the placing of shoes to the horse's foot. A farrier couples a subset of the blacksmith's skills (fabricating, adapting, and adjusting metal shoes) with a subset of veterinary medicine (knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the lower limb) to address the care of the horse's feet. (copied from Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Farrier) I wish you all a weekend of happy feet.

I have been to the horses this past weekend. For those who don't know, we participate in endurance riding. My daughter is the rider and I groom for her. She completed 81kms to her credit on Saturday morning. The previous afternoon while waiting for the vet check, I had the opportunity to take some backlit pictures of this young man stomping the sand hill. Workload is on me again, so I guess I will have to limit my activity for the next ten days. I have pictures loaded but may not be so active otherwise.
