Pedro and the EMD

Travelling south from the Duoro river one comes across the Serra de Estrela (Estrela Mountains), in the Estrela National Park. The area is dotted with villages and in places you can find people living the old ways. They have a mountain cheese, which is especially good when it becomes a little runny in the middle (think of brie cheese). In the village of Sabugueiro you can buy your own EMD - Estrela Mountain Dog. It is a big dog, fierce protector of the herd and gentle with children.

While driving in the mountains, I came across Pedro, the goatherd and his dogs. The big dog behind him is a real EMD. The rest of the dogs seem to be cross breeds between pavement specials and streetside terriers. Pedro and I had quite a chat, considering I know 20 words of Portuguese.

With this picture I will sign off for 3 to 4 weeks, as I will be visiting the Curry Wurst Museum in Berlin and the beer garden known as West Flanders.

What a great ending.
Louis: Thank you Ray
This is a wonderful photo, Louis!! what a terrific encounter - and to actually have a chat with 20 words... very good!
Have a great trip!
Louis: Well, he is an intelligent and friendly person, which helps. Sort of like one wouldn't expect from a goatherd. Thank you, Elizabeth
A super photo, Louis. Enjoy your trip...And the beer. smile
Louis: Thnk you Frank, I plan to work on it.

The dog is nearly as big as the goats!

You will enjoy the Currywurst Museum Louis, Chad and I went there once. Indeed Berlin is, full of oddities. You'll love it..
Louis: They are big dogs, indeed.
I remember you two at the sausage bench.

I like Pedro’s umbrella Louis, not often seen on goatherds.
Louis: He is a modern goatherd - he wears glasses as well. He must be tired of dropping from cliff edges smile
Quite a dog. Pedro looks a cheerful chap.

Enjoy your next trip!
Louis: Thank you, Bill. He is cheerful, indeed.
Off again, Louis! You are always on the go. I like the big dog and the little dogs.
Louis: You are no slow poke yourself, Mary smile You just slip the 'away' pics in, seamlessly. Whatever. The dogs were quite friendly - not a tooth bared at my intrusion.
A fine shot to end your visit. Enjoy your next trip, I look forward to what have find to show us.
Louis: Thank you Brian. I may decide to call it a day on the Portugal visit, with this picture, but it is still far from the end of my visit. So many places and good pictures left. Stories of megaliths, aqueducts, menhirs, abandoned towns, what happened to the Jews during the 17th century, a flower festival and lots more. At three pictures a week, it just takes too long. On the other hand I just don't have the time to do more. I just can't believe that being on pension is such a busy occupation. The trip is just to force myself to take a break, to tell the truth.

i would not like that large EMD to get on my lap, Louis. a fine image, especially with the yellows on the landscape.
Louis: All these mountain areas in Portugal, are alive with flowers and lots of heather around. When you stand in a cool breeze, you get that distinct herb-like smell.
This photo may have been taken in the south of Italy. smile
Louis: The old ways are still followed.
He's certainly got enough dogs! I recall seeing such fellows and their goats when I first started going to Portugal in the 80s - but don't see too many of them now.
Louis: These mountains are full of surprises. Besides this fellow, I saw another one with his goats, but at a great distance.
