Ridgebacks

We visited people in Gobabis, a small town in cattle country, Namibia. They have these two Ridgeback dogs, watching goings on the street side of the fence.

Extremely handsome dawgs, Louis.

I have learned something new from this post...I always thought ridgebacks had a ridge of permanently raised hair down their backs.
Louis: I like them, too, Ray. They don't have a ridge of raised hair. The ridge consists of hair growing against the grain, so to say. The ridge may be bordered with whorls or a few tufts of hair standing up. Since the ridge is about growing against the grain, when you view the dog from behind like in the picture, the ridge all but disappears.
One of my favourite dogs Louis. Great capture.
Louis: Thank you Richard. They are great dogs.

Waiting for walkies!
Louis: These two will pull you where they want to go. Their training doesn't include training under the leash.
Ahhh. So THAT'S what they're called. I see them from time to time here where we live and have always wondered what they're called. Two handsome fellas.
Louis: In Dutch they are 'Pronkrug' https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pronkrug Two great dogs - Mufasa and Ben.

a couple or twins!
Louis: In't leven zijn ze vader en zoon. De vader is links.
Not to be messed with I suspect Louis.
Louis: Not at all, gutteridge. Since I visit their owner once a year, they are friendly with me, but I have seen how they act towards strangers.
Doing what dogs do best. Smelling whatever is closest to their nose.
Louis: Great description, Mary. Like little children that puts everything in the mouth, to check whether it is edible, they smell everything for the same reason.
Handsome working dogs Louis
Louis: Originally bred for hunting big game, like lion. No, they just keep the lion occupied until the hunter arrives. Main point is that almost all other breeds of dog, run away when they smell lion. They are also good at looking after their own patch.
they are magnificent dogs Louis... a woman who is friends with us has had two of them over the past 20 years...
they are gentle but very protective of Manon....petersmile
Louis: I have one myself, peter. They clearly consider who should enter the property - so yes, they are good for protection. They were also bred for hunting big game - I would say then, they are born hunters as well.

What a wonderful colour the dogs have. Are they considered 'watch dogs'...? I would think twice to enter this garden.
Louis: Oorspronkelijk gefokt voor de jacht op groot wild zoals de leeuw en ter verdediging van huis en haard. Well, there is the answer to that smile You may enter this garden with me and they will associate you as a friend. I visit them once a year when I go to Namibia and they immediately recognise me as one of the few people they play with. The breed is very reserved even with people they know. I am one of three people with whom these two will be playful.
Impressive animals, louis.
Louis: They are, Frank
Handsome beasts - a friend of mine has one
Louis: Handsome and they don't demand a lot of attention. They like it, but don't demand it.
Checking out what's to see...
Louis: Sleeping, eating, planting doggy land mines, looking who or what to bark at - I agree, a dog has a hard life ...
between the two of them, i wonder if they could bring that rickety door down. perhaps not, but they appear to be looking out wishfully.
Louis: That rickety door is made of steel in all the right places - they have tried smile

Ils ne veulent pas se faire photographier.
Louis: Ce doit être la raison pour laquelle ils sont montrant leur derrière. Je pense qu'ils sont beaux à partir de tous les côtés smile Merci, pour le commentaire, Martine.
