Three wise men

Detail from the Nativity scene in the sacristy of the Estrela Basilica. A wooden framework, covered in virgin oak and terra cotta figures, make up the scene.

At the bottom you can see the sheep of shepherds in the caves around Bethlehem, where sheep were kept. Coming down the path are the 3 wise men and their entourage. Behind them follows the soldiers, sent by King Herod, to slaughter all male infants in Bethlehem.

As I have mentioned with the previous picture, there are a lot of everyday activities going on, to complete the scene. Many of these everyday activities, are based on Portugues life in the 18th century. That explains the Portuguese style windmill to the left of the group of soldiers.

It is extraordinary, Louis.
Louis: Quite so, thanks Ray
Oh my goodness that is so elaborate!
Louis: A real biggie, Elizabeth.
OMG. I bet there's nothing like this anywhere else, Louis!
Louis: In size, you are probably right, Ginnie. The artist and his team built two smaller replicas, elsewhere in Portugal. I don't know anything about their current state, except that they were smaller when built.

Isn't this a wonderful thing Louis!
Louis: Absolutely, Chris.
It is quite something. Even with the anachronistic windmill.
Louis: I agree, Bill. I have seen a few of those mills in real life and have pics to prove it.

This is incredibly elaborate Louis, what a sight. Also, a reminder of how quickly time is moving back round to that time of year.
Louis: Oh, no! Tomorrow, September starts and last year they played carols in some shops in Sept. My wife is going to be livid - so I will do the shopping smile
What a fascinating thing to see.
Louis: Fascinating indeed, Brian. My inspection lasted about an hour.
Amazing stuff, isn't it?
Louis: I thought so too, Tom.

The details are fabulous. I think this scene tell the whole story and one can spend hours to look at it.
This is wonderful.
Louis: Purists will probably find some pieces of the story missing. According to the blurb, it is the nativity that shows most parts of the Christmas story.
