People in the Estrela park 4

In the Jardim da Estrela, just inside the basilica side entrance, on the one side students are planting flowers and the other side, a cyclist is waiting for something.

All over Portugal where there are universities or colleges in a town with parks, the students (those studying something relevant) take responsibility for the plants in at least one park in that town/city.

There was no visible sign of something wrong with the bicycle. I just got the idea that he parked it upside down and was resting or waiting. Strange bicycle though, with a different size back wheel.

the planters are doing a good job Louis... but the fellow with the bike either has a flat or doesn't have a kickstand....petersmile
Louis: Maybe he doesn't have a kickstand - the tyre looked very flush to the rim. Thanks peter.
i like the colour being added to left shot. i have never parked my bike like that, Louis. i wonder if the reason for that fat rear tyre was to get some additional grip, perhaps for an off road trip?
Louis: The fat tyre is not the only strange thing, Ayush. As the bike stands, you can see the tyre will be higher than the saddle, when in an upright position. The other thing to consider is that this man is rather tall and then consider the distance from the saddle to the nearest pedal. Just makes no sense. For him, riding that bike must be a big job.

He's got a flat, but no tools to repair it...text'd his brother to bring stuff, and is now waiting...

I like the idea of Uni Students taking care of a garden...many winners in that arrangement, Louis.
Louis: The part about waiting for a brother is a possibility. His bicycle is a strange one. As the bike stands in the picture, you can see the back tyre will be higher than the saddle, when in an upright position. The other thing to consider is that this man is rather tall and then consider the visible distance from the saddle to the nearest pedal. Just makes no sense. I googled the name of the bicycle (Sram) but got none the wiser, as I couldn't find the same model.
I have seen the same thing with students in Paris, Louis. It sounds like a great idea. Use the students who need the small change and experience. The guy with the bike has his own story, I'm sure. smile
Louis: A great idea, indeed. Everyone benefits from the arrangement.

Doing something and doing nothing, a portrait of life itself Louis
Louis: You have the contrasting of the diptych down pat, Chris,

It could have a flat tyre and be waiting for the breakdown vehicle.
Louis: The breakdown vehicle is a possibility, gutteridge.
Good idea for garden care. I wish they would teach gardening in primary schools.
Louis: Ooh, child labour activists will go after the school system, I think. But somehow I can see it will be a good thing all round, for children to learn the basics of plant care and animal husbandry.
Is it a bird? is it a plane? No it's bicycle repair man!
Louis: Heh, heh - he kept on looking in one direction, very hopefully.

Identical flowers and identical work-clothes, Louis
Louis: Colour coding is well done, Lisl smile
Two rather differenct occupations!
Louis: Very much in contrast I thought, Tom.
Jolies scènes de vie.
Louis: Merci bien, Martine

Thank you for the write-up and it make sense that students work the green. In many places in the Netherlands people with a mental disability are working the greens, supervised by a foreman/forewoman. About the bike, I think this is a bike to do tricks with, the back tire might be not as much inflated as the front tire, he stands on the pedals.. I will see if I can try a YouTube to show what I mean... hang on, I will be back in a few seconds...
Okay, I am back, it is a trial bike.... https://hansrey.com/hans-bikes/
Louis: I have met some of Dutch green workers - quite interesting and they are so enthusiastic. Thanks for the link, Astrid; it does shed some light on the guy's bicycle.
Two contrasting attitudes...
Louis: Seemingly so, Larry
I guess with the bike like that nobody could just grab it, leap on and ride off.
Louis: Yes Brian, it may have some more surprises.
