Another Portuguese castle. This one was taken from the Moors by Fernando I of Castilla in 1064. Not too long after the Portuguese formed a nation/kingdom under Afonso Henrique and the few Castillians and all the Moors were driven from the new country. As these things happen, Afonso was a grandson of Fernando I.
This castle is along the river Mondego and some 20km's from the sea. The river valley is quite marshy - wet and flat. One of the products from this area is rice, which will be planted inthe paddies, one can see here.
