I didn't realize that there was a debate about the meaning of the phrase. I do wonder what this phrase is doing on a church, though. I don't see an obvious connection. The warm colors are very appealing, btw.

I totally sympathize over the angle issues you faced and think you did this justice (though I find myself wishing there were more terracotta at the top above the sundial). The color is magnificent! WOW. Talk about a church standing out! And you know you made my day with the sundial!

Louis: Happy sundial day - was thinking a lot about you and S&S when I saw this wall. About the additional terracotta to top the dial - I wish I could do it - I had to 'crop' out a white gutter, which meant I had to get close to the sundial from the top. That was part of the issue I faced with trying to take the pic from straight in front.
This is one of those moments you see something very nice with the eyes, but to make a good picture of it is difficult. Personal experience can beat the picture most of the time

It really does not take long for one to perfect their art, what takes time is for the artist to realize this is what they want to show the world, in other words the artist has reached a stage where they say this is what I have done, what do you think ? Louis: Although the quote I used in my comment is a cut and paste - not my personal view - I did choose it from a number of possible entries. Meaning that I thought it will be the most worthwhile contribution.

The world of learning skills is a speciality of mine and I have passion for it. It doesn't make me the only one who know something about the subject, but at my age I can philosophise meaningful about the subject.

It is a fact that you have two types of skill routes inherent in mankind. The one is about natural propensity and the other the skills obtained by rote learning.

If you are a natural - let's say an artist you have the ability inherent and will need simple guidance to flourish in the art area. Take someone like Mozart as an example.
If it has to be learnt, you can have blocks that you have to overcome to learn a certain skillset. One may be the lack of basic ability. You may be pushed in the wrong direction. In the end you will qualify to do the work, be mediocre, good and even very good at that, but never excellent.

The natural learns fast, the other slower.

In modern human sciences (e.g. psychology) recognition is given to other learning fields. The old IQ (when you and I were young) was an indication of general school ability - why it was called a scholastic IQ. Over the last 30 years or so, recognition has been given to learning abilities in other fields - the one bandied about the most is the social learning or the general remark that he/she has social skills.

I believe that if you are naturally gifted, you can still be hampered by lack of other skill sets. I believe that is what Aristotle has referred to. The artist in this position can be very frustrated in expressing him/herself. Which may lead to further misperformance in the lacking skillset. E.g. his social skillset no OK, can't sell the creations, fall into overt unsocial behaviour, e.g. drinking, fits of depression, etc. Mozart had great difficulties accepting authority, etc etc.

Applied in our common field of interest. There are people born with the ability to 'see' a good composition, even if it is not there. So the photographer can create the composition with materials and stuff available. This person just need to learn how to operate the tools available in the trade.
The other photographer has to learn the rules of a good composition as well. E.g. rule of thirds, leading eye lines and all that. If this person takes time to carefully set up each shot - he/she will end up in the category of very good. But never excellent.

You may have seen pictures by people that one after the other is immaculate. But it lacks warmth, personality etc.
Sometimes you see pictures which are excellent, yet flaunting so many rules.
You asked me what I think - that is it for the moment
